JEA Partnering with Customers to be Ready for 2022 Hurricane Season

2022-06-01

JACKSONVILLE, FL, June 1, 2022 – With today’s start of the 2022 hurricane season, JEA is encouraging Northeast Florida residents to join with the utility in being prepared. Even though no one knows when a tropical storm or hurricane will impact the region, JEA takes a variety of steps throughout the year to keep the community safe -- before, during and after severe weather.

“Our customers rely on us, particularly during major storms,” JEA Chief Operating Officer Raynetta Curry Marshall said. “JEA has invested millions of dollars to harden our electric and water operations so they can better withstand the effects of major storms.”

Those investments include replacing wooden poles with concrete, adding 160 generators and pumps across our plants and facilities and hardening electric service to our largest pump stations.

Since most storm-related power outages result from tree branches falling on power lines, JEA reduces the risk of downed branches causing outages during a storm by trimming trees across the region all year long.

In recent years, JEA also has launched new technology to better serve customers and to address issues before they escalate during inclement weather. JEA has developed an interactive 3D map to allow us to monitor our 1,550 sewer pumping stations and more than 500 water pressure sensors. By increasing situational awareness, the Augmented Operational Intelligence system has helped us minimize Sanitary Sewer Overflows and maintain water pressure throughout our system.

JEA is also encouraging residential and business customers to take the following actions now to prepare for possible storm-related impacts during the next six months:

  • Visit JEA.com/storm to ensure your contact information is up-to-date and to register for power restoration alerts.
  • To report electric or water outages during a storm, visit jea.com/outage or call 904-665-6000.
  • Customers who have enrolled in electric outage alerts also can text “OUT” to MyJEA (69532) to report an outage.
