JEA SmartSavings: Proposed Residential Pilot Program
JEA’s residential pilot program, JEA SmartSavings, is exploring new ways for customers to be more in control of their energy use.
JEA is piloting the SmartSavings program with a limited number of customers who opted to sign up. Due to the limitations of this initial pilot, we cannot accept any additional participants at this time.
Let’s Focus on Timing First
Demand for electricity varies throughout the day. Demand is lowest during the night when most people sleep and most businesses are closed. On the other hand, demand is highest during the day while businesses are operating and people are active. In the summer in Florida, demand is highest from around noon to early evening as the day heats up and as people come home from work. In winter, when people get up in the morning they turn the heat warmer and keep it running until around mid-morning when they go to work and the sun warms things up. Those high usage hours are referred to as peak usage hours or Peak Hours for short. Peak Hours are generally the more costly times to use energy and therefore electricity used during Peak Hours is charged at a higher rate.
Peak Hours to Avoid on JEA SmartSavings
- April - October (Summer): Monday - Friday, 12 p.m. - 7 p.m.
- November - March (Winter): Monday - Friday, 6 a.m. - 9 a.m.
Weekends and holidays are excluded from Peak Hours but are included in the "anytime" hours during the month. Holidays include New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Think About How You Use Appliances
The more appliances you use at one time, the higher your demand will be at that specific time and the more demand you will require from JEA’s electric system. The key to savings here is to not run multiple high-usage appliances at the same time. Instead, have them “take turns” and spread their usage over different time periods - preferably outside of Peak Hours.
