JEA Crews Restoring Power Throughout Jacksonville


JACKSONVILLE, FL, (Sept. 29, 2022) – As Northeast Florida endures impacts from Tropical Storm Ian, JEA crews are already restoring power to thousands of customers throughout the region.


JEA is directing resources toward restoring service to all customers as soon as safety allows, and thanking local residents for their patience. 


During a City of Jacksonville media briefing earlier today, JEA Managing Director & CEO Jay Stowe said utility crews have been responding safely and “really well” to most of the reported outages locally during the storm’s first 24 hours. He said any continuing winds higher than 30 miles per hour could delay some service restorations “for the moment.”


“We look at it moment by moment to be sure our crews are safe, but they will be back out there as soon as those winds subside,” Stowe said.


Tropical Storm Ian is producing low-end tropical storm force winds with gusts up to 60 mph. According to forecasts, the storm is expected to strengthen and turn once again into a Category 1 hurricane and possibly cause coastal surges overnight.


JEA has made significant progress in restoring power throughout the day. Outages peaked at 20,000, just shy of 4 percent of JEA’s 505,000 electric customers. As of 4 p.m., more than 11,000 customers were still without power.


“We learned a lot from Irma and Matthew. Our investments in hardening our infrastructure made a significant difference in strengthening resiliency,” said JEA Chief Operating Officer Raynetta Curry Marshall.


Customers without power are being advised that utility workers and tree trimmers remain out in the communities and are working as quickly as safety permits to restore power. 


Power outages can be reported at or by calling 904-665-6000. Customers who have enrolled in outage alerts also can text “OUT” to MyJEA (69532) to report their outage.


“We know our job isn’t done as long as we still have residents without power. Rest assured, our crews are out working to restore service, and they will continue to do so until the job is done,” Marshall said
