JEA Prepared for 2025 Hurricane Season, Provides Tips for Customers

2025-05-05

Jacksonville, FL - This week is Hurricane Preparedness Week, and JEA is encouraging Northeast Florida residents to join with the utility in being fully prepared for what could be an above average storm season.

“We know how disruptive major storms can be to our customers and community. That’s why we prepare throughout the year for hurricane season. You can count on JEA’s dedicated teams to respond swiftly and safely to whatever comes our way,” JEA CEO & Managing Director Vickie Cavey said.

How JEA Prepares

JEA works throughout the year to provide for the community’s safety before, during and after severe weather. JEA continually invests in utility upgrades, including new technologies and electric and water infrastructure. In the past year, the utility has replaced more than 1,250 poles and added back-up auxiliary equipment to 32 pump stations.

JEA reduces the risk of downed trees and broken branches causing outages by pruning trees within the rights-of-way all year long. JEA encourages customers help build the resiliency of Jacksonville’s urban tree canopy by properly maintaining and planting trees on their property. Dead and declining branches, structural defects, and other tree hazards should be addressed in advance of a storm’s approach.

JEA also minimizes sanitary sewer overflows with an advanced manhole-level monitoring system installed at over 110 locations in our service area. By remotely monitoring rising levels in the sewer collection system during inclement weather, JEA can proactively respond by dispatching crews ahead of time.

What Customers Can Do

JEA encourages residential and business customers to take the following actions to prepare for possible storm-related impacts during hurricane season:

  • Follow JEA on social media.
  • Ensure your contact information is up to date and register for power restoration alerts at JEA.com/storm.
  • Gather supplies and prepare your home or business.
  • Trim trees to remove dead or weak branches and those close to power lines.
  • Identify where the nearest shelter is located and the routes to get there.
  • Have a plan for family members with special medical needs. Customers reliant on medical devices should consider sitting a storm out at a shelter.
