JEA Prepares for Subtropical Storm Nicole


JACKSONVILLE - JEA is closely monitoring Subtropical Storm Nicole to ensure the utility is ready to respond as quickly as possible to any customer service needs in the wake of the storm’s impacts, particularly if it intensifies prior to landfall. 

A Tropical Storm Watch is now in effect for Northeast Florida’s coastline, and a Storm Surge Watch is in effect for the entire area, as well. At a minimum, forecasters expect the storm to bring tropical storm winds from Wednesday evening through Friday morning along the Atlantic coast. The storm may cause widespread power outages, and heavy rainfall could cause flooding, which could include portions of the St. Johns River and its tributaries.

“We know JEA customers rely on us every day, especially during severe weather. As the storm approaches, JEA’s 2,000+ team members will be ready to mobilize and respond as needed,” JEA Managing Director & CEO Jay Stowe said.

JEA has prepared by topping off fuel tanks, halting construction projects and increasing the number of stand-by employees. It also has deployed portable generators and pumps to vulnerable sites.

Customers are encouraged to ensure their contact information is up to date on their account and to sign up for voice, email or text alerts. In the event of an outage, JEA will be able to contact customers directly with restoration updates. Customers who have enrolled in outage alerts also can text “OUT” to MyJEA (69532) to report their outage. 

JEA customers can be assured that the company has worked throughout the year to prepare for severe weather in a number of ways:

  • Storm Hardening: JEA has invested in hardening our electric, water and sewer systems to make them more resistant to storm-related disruptions. These critical repairs and improvements help us restore power and return to normal operations more quickly after a major storm.
  • Year-Round Tree Trimming: Year-Round Tree Trimming: While strong winds and heavy rains cause their share of storm damage, most storm-related power outages result from tree branches falling on power lines. JEA trims trees across the city all year long. 
  • Water & Sewer Upgrades: We’ve invested in upgrading our water and sewer facilities, and have installed backup generators to reduce the risk of storm-related service interruptions.
