JEA Recycling Cooking Oil Collected at Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament

Jacksonville, FL - JEA and Metro-Rooter are collecting used cooking oil at this week’s Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament. The used cooking oil will be recycled into biodiesel fuel.

Fats, oils and grease are the number one cause of sanitary sewer overflows and back-ups for JEA’s sewer customers. Each year in Jacksonville, 11 gallons on average are used per person. That’s an impressive 9,577,799 gallons of oil and grease. This can either go in the trash or down the drain. But with this type of recycling effort, it can be recycled into biodiesel, an alternative fuel with properties similar to petroleum diesel except that it burns cleaner.

And, beginning next week, JEA is delivering used cooking oil recycling stations to 11 area Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department Stations so that everyone can recycle their used cooking oil and grease. Find a recycling station in your neighborhood.

In an agreement with the City of Jacksonville Department of Public Works, JEA intends to provide more stations in the future. The Jacksonville community will benefit from having a neighborhood collection point at each of the designated firehouses. And, oil that is recycled means it is not being poured down the drain, saving money for all JEA customers.

Customers can also drop-off used cooking oil and grease at Metro-Rooter’s main office on 8892 Normandy Boulevard, two miles west of I-295. They accept used cooking oil seven days a week during daylight hours.

JEA uses biodiesel fuel or ethanol or electricity in more than 40 percent of its vehicle fleet in collaboration with the City of Jacksonville’s Fleet Management Division. As a result of these efforts, JEA was ranked in the top 100 of U.S. fleets utilizing alternative fuels by Automotive Fleet Magazine.
