2023-04-06

BONNER SPRINGS, KAN. (April. , 2023) – Three teams of JEA lineworkers captured several awards at the American Public Power Association’s Lineworkers Rodeo in Kansas City, Kansas.

Approximately 300 participants, including 45 teams and 100 apprentices, competed from March 31 to April 1. The “rodeo” is a series of competitive events demonstrating lineworker skills and safe work practices. The events are judged on safety, work practices, neatness, ability, equipment handling and timely event completion.

The two levels of competition within the rodeo are journeyman and apprentice. The journeyman teams consist of three members – two climbers and a ground person – and can include an optional alternate. Journeymen have years of experience within the electric utility trade, while an apprentice lineworker is newer to the craft.

JEA’s Journeyman team -- Cody Stokes, Caleb Macabitas and Doug Baye -- won third place in the 2.4kV Cut Out and Insulator Change Out.

In the Apprentice competitions, Ryan Kornegay won two first-place honors, in the Cutout Relocate and as Apprentice – Overall. Noah Sapp won second place in the Crossarm Relocate.
