JEA Receives Statewide Recognition for Safety

2023-03-06

JACKSONVILLE – The Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA) has recognized JEA with a Safety Award for its commitment to safety and injury prevention.

Electric linework is recognized as as one of the country’s most dangerous jobs, which is why utilities place a strong emphasis on safety culture and training. In order to provide reliable power, Florida lineworkers and power crews frequently engage in dangerous work that can place them at risk of serious or fatal injuries.

“Safety is a core value at JEA, both the physical and emotional well-being of our team members. That commitment allows us to continue to provide safe, reliable service to our customers,” JEA Managing Director & CEO Jay Stowe said.

JEA received recognition in the category with similar-sized utilities at an FMEA awards ceremony in Orlando on March 4. FMEA categorizes utilities based on their total employee hours and rewards organizations with the most incident-free records. The incidence rate used to judge utilities was based on the number of work-related reportable injuries or illnesses compared to the total number of worker hours during 2022, as defined by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

FMEA recognized a total of 13 public utilities with safety awards.

Florida’s Public Power utilities are locally owned, controlled and operated, enabling them to quickly respond to the needs of their communities. They also are among some of the most reliable power providers in the state.
