JEA Receives First Place Safety Award from Florida Municipal Electric Association

2021-03-11

JACKSONVILLE -- JEA has received first-place honors in the Florida Municipal Electric Association’s (FMEA) 2020 Safety Performance Awards. This noteworthy industry award recognizes JEA’s ongoing commitment to safety, injury prevention and overall continuous improvement efforts.

Electric line work is one of the country’s top 10 most dangerous professions. Line workers risk electrocution, falls, burns and other injuries in every type of weather as part of their daily efforts to provide reliable and affordable power. For this reason, public power communities across Florida emphasize the importance of safety training and safety precautions.

For the past 30 years, FMEA has recognized these communities’ efforts to further ensure crew safety as a core business value. As part of FMEA’s Safety Awards program, utilities are placed in categories based on total hours worked, and those utilities with the lowest incident frequency rate receive recognition. The incident ratio used to judge utility safety performance is based on the number of recordable injuries per 100 full-time employees on a calendar year basis as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

“Line work is an incredibly rewarding profession, but it is also a very risky one that could result in serious injuries and fatalities. That is why utilities must make safety their top priority. In this industry, nothing is more important than the lives and wellbeing of our line workers,” said Amy Zubaly, FMEA executive director. “Congratulations to JEA for its commitment to worker safety and being among the 21 public power communities recognized this year.”
