Statement on Holiday Road Sewer Overflow

2022-01-17

JACKSONVILLE — JEA’s Holiday Road lift station (7834 Holiday Road South) experienced equipment failure on a bypass pump on Jan. 16, causing a 90,000-gallon sewer overflow near and into Pottsburg Creek. Shortly after discovery, JEA teams inspected the site and quickly made repairs to return the station to normal operational status.

The failure occurred with the bypass pump — which helps the lift station with operations — during a construction project designed to improve the system.

The impacted ground area was remediated, and hydrated lime was applied to the affected soil to kill bacteria and reduce odors.

JEA began taking samples of the impacted water area today (Jan. 17). First results are expected late morning Jan. 18. JEA notified state regulatory agencies on Jan. 16 and placed sanitary sewer overflow signs in the vicinity of the release advising residents against swimming, fishing or drinking from nearby bodies of water.

More information also can be found on jea.com.

JEA will continue to monitor the area and take additional remediation steps as necessary.
