JEA Receives Special Recognition Award for Outstanding Safety Performance

Jacksonville, FL - JEA has received a special recognition award from the Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA) for outstanding safety performance in 2010. JEA, the largest municipal utility in Florida, has one of the lowest incident rates in the state. With more than four million hours worked, JEA’s recordable incident rate (RIR) was 2.04. The recordable incident rate, or RIR, is calculated based upon an organization’s number of work-related incidents and hours that are worked, as defined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Each year, the FMEA conducts an annual safety contest to emphasize the importance of safe work practices, to recognize those utilities whose employees achieve particularly safe operations, and to collect statistical information about safety issues. Utilities compete in categories according to their size, or number of hours worked, and are evaluated by their recordable incident rate.

Because JEA is the largest municipal utility in the state and nearly double the size of the next biggest publicly-owned utility, it competes alone in group G of the FMEA annual safety contest. Since there is no competition in this group, the significance of this award lies in the fact that, despite size and considerable potential for incidents and injuries, JEA’s incident rate was still among the lowest in the state.

For 68 years, the Florida Municipal Electric Association has served as the trade association for JEA and Florida’s 34 public power communities located across the state. Together, community-owned utilities are comprised of more than 6,000 employees who serve more than 3 million Floridians. Collectively, FMEA is the third largest source of power in the state. 

JEA is the largest not-for-profit, community-owned electric utility in Florida and the eighth largest in the United States, providing electric, water and sewer service to accounts in northeast Florida.
