JEA's Long-Range Clean Energy Plan Available to Public

Jacksonville, FL - JEA has released a final report underpinning its plan to expand its long-range clean energy goals. The report, known as an electric Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), is available for the public to view on jea.com/irp in advance of a community forum on May 25 to discuss the details of JEA’s assertive timeline for 2030 and beyond.

The IRP report is the product of more than 20 months of discussions between JEA leaders and a diverse set of community stakeholders, working together to guide JEA’s electric system investments for the next three decades. JEA’s plan is designed to meet the annual peak electric energy demand of JEA customers through a combination of existing supply resources, increased renewable energy and additional conservation measures.

“Throughout this planning process, we have kept in mind the need to balance reliability, affordability and sustainability to serve our customers,” JEA Managing Director & CEO Jay Stowe said. “And now we look forward to inviting the entire community to be part of the discussion.”

On Thursday, May 25, JEA will host a public forum, “Your YOUtility. Your Future Energy Mix.” at WJCT Studios. WJCT News 89.9 talk show host Melissa Ross will lead a panel discussion with Stowe and four IRP Stakeholder Committee members. A Q&A session will allow audience members to ask questions about the plan and next steps. The event is free but registration is required, as there is limited seating. Guests who cannot attend will be able to view a livestream of the forum on Jax Today’s Facebook page.

JEA’s board of directors recently approved goals for 2030, including:

• 35 percent clean energy as part of its power supply portfolio.
• Retiring less efficient generating assets.
• Leading the way by using 100 percent clean energy to serve JEA facilities. 
• Increasing energy efficiency programs to offset growing demands from the ongoing electrification of homes, businesses and vehicles. 

By 2030, these goals will result in an 80 percent reduction in JEA’s overall carbon emissions since 2005.

Jacksonville Chief Resilience Officer Anne Coglianese, one of 22 members who served on JEA’s IRP Stakeholder Committee, said: “If Jacksonville is going to meet its resilience goals, there must be buy-in from the community and all its stakeholders. A key component of meeting these goals involves the creation of resilient infrastructure. It is imperative that we prioritize resilience when developing the future of JEA and Jacksonville’s energy grid.”
