JEA River Crossing Project Completed

2012-08-15

Jacksonville, FL - Today, JEA and its project team have successfully completed the river crossing portion of the JEA Total Water Management Plan (TWMP). This segment involved the installation of more than 6,000 linear feet of a 36-inch water main pipe, 60 feet below the floor of the St. Johns River.

The large pipe exited the drill casing located near Talleyrand off Beaver Street at approximately 5 p.m. August 15. JEA hired design-builder, Haskell, which teamed with Jacobs Engineering and Michels Corporation to manage, design and install this complex drill project, which was finished approximately four weeks ahead of schedule.

JEA now plans to begin removing the concrete barriers along the eastbound travel lane and eight on/off ramps located along the Arlington Expressway from the foot of the Mathews Bridge to the Arlington Road overpass.

The removal of these barriers will occur in conjunction with the Florida Department of Transportation’s planned closure of the eastbound travel lanes on the Mathews Bridge scheduled for this evening from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. August 16. Once removed, all roads, ramps and overpasses will return to their normal pre-construction traffic patterns. All barriers will be removed by approximately 4 p.m. Thursday, August 16.

JEA’s TWMP will balance water withdrawals from the aquifer on each side of the St. Johns River. The project includes a potable water transmission pipeline comprised of six projects or segments of large diameter water pipe (36-inch, 30-inch and 24-inch). The overall project is scheduled for completion in September 2013.

JEA is the seventh largest community-owned electric utility in the United States and one of the largest water and sewer utilities in the nation providing electric, water and sewer service to residents and businesses in northeast Florida.
