Jacksonville Artist Selected by Riverside Avondale Preservation and JEA to Paint City’s Newest Mural
2025-10-03
Jacksonville, FL (Oct. 3, 2025) - After 60 collective hours of jurying by a selection committee, Jacksonville’s Patrick Maxcy has been selected as the artist of the public mural on the JEA pump station located under the Fuller Warren Bridge along the St. Johns River. The site is the location of the weekly Riverside Arts Market (RAM). Maxcy will be awarded $20,000 to complete the mural, privately funded by the Jacksonville Environmental Protection Board (JEPB), the PNC Foundation and Haskell.
Maxcy’s design, which is themed around water, will be painted al fresco on the JEA pump station, an area approximately 17 feet tall by 90 feet wide. Maxcy’s original sketch mockup for the mural can be seen here. Hardbarger Painting will provide in-kind services to prepare the pump station surface before Maxcy begins his work.
Riverside Avondale Preservation (RAP), which coordinated the project through its placemaking efforts, opened a public call for artists on July 2 and received 70 submissions upon its close on Aug. 20.
The selection committee narrowed the submissions to three finalists and JEA leadership approved the highest-rated proposal, selecting Maxcy’s submission as the winner.
The selection committee was comprised of members representing RAP’s Placemaking Committee, RAM, JEA, JEPB, PNC Foundation, Haskell, Hardbarger Painting, and Phoenix Arts & Innovation District.
“JEA is proud to select Patrick Maxcy for this exciting and transformative mural project at our pump station located at 718 Standish Place," JEA Director of Community Engagement Greg Corcoran said. "Patrick has regional ties and a proven record of delivering impactful public art, along with a strong connection to the themes of conservation and water stewardship. His work will celebrate our community while underscoring our shared responsibility to protect and preserve our most valuable resource - water.”
Maxcy is a painter, muralist and illustrator who first found inspiration for his work in the ocean near his childhood home of Flagler Beach, Fla. His art is heavily inspired by his travels throughout the world. His paintings juxtapose playfulness alongside more serious detailed symbolism.
With a professional career spanning almost two decades, Maxcy has painted murals all over the U.S., as well as South America and Africa. His fine art paintings can also be found at galleries throughout the country. Maxcy has done work for numerous organizations including The Audubon Nature Institute, Muhammad Ali Center and WildAid.
Maxcy’s mural is anticipated to be completed by the end of October.
