Extreme heat leads to peak demand
2025-07-31
Jacksonville, FL - Extreme heat pushed JEA’s electric system to hit new summer peak loads on both July 28 and 29. On July 28, JEA set a new all-time summer peak load of 2,959 megawatts (MW), breaking the previous summer peak record of 2,937 MW set in August 2007.
Monday’s record was broken on July 29 with a new all-time record of 2,980 MW. These record-breaking levels not only reflect the continued growth of our community but also the increasing demand for electricity during extreme weather and the resilience of our system to keep up with our customers’ needs.
During a typical summer, JEA’s electric system experiences a peak load of approximately 2,500–2,600 MW. Reaching these new peak loads is a direct reflection of the dedication of our operations team, who work each day to ensure our customers receive safe and reliable service every day.
