Case Study: Hospital Lighting Upgrades

JEA offers a range of energy efficiency opportunities to help small businesses save energy and money. Whether you’re installing a new lighting system, or upgrading your HVAC equipment, InvestSmart with JEA has a variety of incentives available.

Local Hospital Saves on Lighting Costs

Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital has been providing world class physical rehabilitation services in Jacksonville for almost 40 years and is the only one of its kind in the region. The 157-bed hospital contains state-of-the-art equipment and expertly trained staff to treat stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, orthopedic, and pediatric conditions. This 24-hour per day, 365-day per year schedule means that they are powering the facility at all times. Project Manager Kelly Hoover explains how the nature of their business requires constant energy usage to operate successfully and ultimately care for patients properly; but it also leads to high energy usage and expenses.

Brooks was researching options for increasing energy efficiency and became aware of the InvestSmart with JEA program and the potential energy and cost savings opportunities through contractor Miller Electric Company. Brooks became convinced to InvestSmart with JEA through a project that included T-12 to T-8 conversions throughout the hospital.

Miller Electric Company performed the upgrades and also advised Hoover on the InvestSmart with JEA program and assisted her through the paperwork and the rebate process, which she describes as “very easy.” A goal for Brooks Rehabilitation was to work towards improved energy efficiency, similar to what they experience at their newly-built Administration Building which is Silver-Certified by U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system.

The lighting upgrades will result in a total estimated energy savings of 45,995 kilowatt-hours per year. The project was also eligible for a rebate of $12,080. Ultimately, the project will pay for itself in about two years.

Hoover concludes, “Not only are we working towards making our hospital more energy efficient, but the quality of illumination has improved by installing the T-8s. It’s better and brighter.”
