Meet JEA’s Jamal, a very cool character who travels to middle schools in JEA’s service territory to teach energy and water efficiency. The performance is called “You Can’t Beat That” and it uses a game show theme reach students.

Jamal asks: “What fuel does the United States use to generate electricity with the most? You have ten seconds to answer the question.”

Jamal asks: “You team captain? You ready to answer the question?” Boy nods. Jamal says: “Hold up. You ready?” Boy nods. Boy says: “B.”

Jamal says: “He said B. Coal. This is correct.”  Cheers.

Not only do students answer efficiency questions, they win prizes by trying to accomplish stunning feats like balancing foam dice on a tongue depresser. It all adds up to fun and learnable science.

Zamaria says: “I learned to turn off my game system because it takes up energy.”

Cecile says: “I think the program was really good because it taught you good ways to conserve water.”

Ashton says: “You cannot put certain types of light bulbs in a garbage can for them to take because they have mercury in them.”
