JEA Kennedy Generating Station Site Remediation Project
Estimated Dates & Work Schedule
Anticipated End Date: 2025-03-31
Project Objective
A contractor working for JEA (Entact, LLC) implemented approved corrective measures that will benefit the environment at the JEA Kennedy Generation Station (KGS) located on Talleyrand Avenue. The south parcel is a 53-acre portion of the property extending from the St. Johns River (SJR) to Talleyrand Avenue (see project work area map below).
Prior to JEA ownership, the parcel was historically used as a wood treating facility whose operations resulted in impacts to site sediments and soils.
The Corrective Measures Implementation Plan was approved by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection in October 2023. The implementation of the approved plan will prevent further impacts to the environment.
Construction Conditions
The corrective measures involved removing sediments form the St. Johns River (SJR), excavating shallow soils, and placing them into a Corrective Action Management Unit, or CAMU. The sediments from the SJR were removed using a dredging operation. The sediments were then be dried and placed in the CAMU. The CAMU is a lined portion of the property that was capped once the sediments were dried and placed in it.
The JEA Kennedy CAMU is a unit located on-site to treat, store, and dispose of dredge materials generated during implementation of corrective measures. Shallow soils on the site were removed using a combination of conventional excavation methods. Shallow soils were excavated from four different areas and were consolidated on the southeast portion of the site and covered with an asphalt cap.
