Community Invited to May 25 Public Forum on Northeast Florida’s Energy Future

JACKSONVILLE—JEA and Jacksonville Today invite the community to participate in a public conversation on May 25 about JEA’s plans for a cleaner and more reliable energy future for Northeast Florida.

For more than a year, JEA leaders have met with a diverse set of community stakeholders to develop a plan to help guide JEA’s electric system investments for the next three decades. JEA’s plan, known as the electric Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), is designed to meet the annual peak electric energy demand of JEA customers through a combination of existing supply resources, increased renewable energy and additional conservation measures.

The JEA board of directors approved the utility’s 2030 energy goals at its April 25 meeting. Those goals include:

• 35 percent clean energy generation.
• Retiring less efficient generation.
• 100 percent clean energy to serve JEA facilities.
• Increased energy efficiency programs to offset growing electrification demands.

With the implementation of these plans, JEA expects that in 2030 it will achieve cumulative carbon emission reductions of 80 percent during a 25-year period dating back to 2005.

The public forum, “Your YOUtility. Your Future Energy Mix.” will be held at WJCT Studios on Thursday, May 25, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. WJCT News 89.9 talk show host Melissa Ross will lead a panel discussion with Stowe and four of the IRP Stakeholder Committee members: City of Jacksonville Deputy Administrative Officer Charles Moreland, St. Johns Riverkeeper Lisa Rinaman, United Way of Northeast Florida President & CEO Melanie Patz and Baptist Health System Director for Plant Facilities Sam Dean. A question-and-answer session will also allow audience members to ask questions about the plan and next steps.
