One of the World’s Most Productive Aquifers
Our water system is made of up of approximately 135 artesian wells tapping into the Floridan aquifer, one of the world’s most productive aquifers. Water is distributed through 36 water treatment plants and over 4,200 miles of water lines. This allows us to provide potable water services to major portions of Duval County, and approximately 63 square miles in St. Johns County and 77 square miles in Nassau County. Our water system also serves a number of customers in Clay County.
An estimated 30 to 40 percent of the potable water (drinking water) delivered to our customers is used for irrigation. To help reduce the amount of water withdrawn from the aquifer, we encourage the use of reclaimed water in new developments and wherever else it might be feasible, like area golf courses. We also educate our customers on conservation so that we can all work together to preserve our natural resources.
