There are many valuable team members who help maintain JEA’s infrastructure to ensure customers receive safe, reliable electric and water services. Engineers are one of the many disciplines that make it happen. JEA engineers enjoy a hybrid work environment, where they work from home and make site visits when needed. Collaboration is key to their daily work – not only with the engineering team, but also with grant managers, coordinators, treatment staff and external construction crews. There is no shortage to the variety of challenging projects a utility engineer may experience.

“We have a lot of aging infrastructure, water treatment plants and wastewater plants that need to be addressed through construction and planning, and making sure we get ahead so they don’t break,” said Michael Dvoroznak, Manager of Water/Wastewater Reuse Treatment Maintenance Planning and Engineering.

Those are not the only challenges. As our area grows, engineers need to prepare our plants, services and more to meet the demands of new customers. “We are a growing community. We have to maintain the existing customer base and the existing equipment as well as we can and prepare it for the future in the advancement of technologies,” Dvoroznak said.

With challenges come many opportunities for engineers at JEA. They can build a long-tenured career in civil service engineering, move up to management or remain an individual contributor. JEA is not only a great place to work. Dvoroznak said it’s also about serving the community. “Knowing that you’re trying to do good for the whole community, not just for today but into the future,” he said. “Trying to get us to be the best utility in the country.”
