As a result of Tropical Storm Fay, more than 150,000 JEA electric customers were without power at some time between Wednesday August 20 and Tuesday, August 26. The highest number out at any one time during the storm was 82,000.
Crews worked all through the storm to get customers’ power back on, while still others were losing power. Many customers were restored quickly. For others, service restoration took longer due to the type of damage involved including tree, wind and rain damage to lines, poles and equipment.
The restoration process (for details see Power Restoration) focuses first on essential services like police, fire and hospitals, then turns to work that will get the largest number of customers on with each action. We understand that customers who must wait until the end are often tired and frustrated by the time they get power, but there is no more effective way to restore power to large numbers of customers.
As of Wednesday morning, August 27, all storm-related power outages were repaired and there were no injuries to JEA employees during the storm or restoration period.
JEA management and employees would like to thank our customers for their patience and support through it all. We take pride in being your community-owned utility.
