JEA is installing a Network Meter Reading (NMR) system that uses wireless technology to read electric and water meters in our service area.
If you are a JEA customer, you will be notified, by letter, several weeks before the electric and/or water meter is scheduled to be replaced or modified at your address. The JEA contractors working in your neighborhood will knock on your door to let you know they are there and give you an opportunity to turn off computers and appliances if necessary. If you are not available, they will leave a notice on or near your front entrance to let you know the status of the work performed. Their vehicles and badges will identify them as JEA representatives. Normal working hours are scheduled for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
On the day the work is done, your service will be interrupted for approximately two minutes while we change the electric meter and approximately 20 minutes for the water meter. Please note that if you have both electric and water service from JEA, the electric meter and water meter may not be changed on the same day. However, the replacements probably will occur no more than two weeks apart. Generally, the contractor performing the work will not need to enter your home unless your meter is indoors.
You will benefit from the new Network Meter Reading system in the following ways:
- Typically, no one from JEA will need to visit your home or business to read the meter.
- JEA will be able to read meters at any time, day or night.
- Meter reads will be accurate and timely, even during bad weather or flooding.
- Except for infrequent technical circumstances, NMR will eliminate the need to estimate your bill. For example, if your meter is inaccessible due to a parked car, a dog, or flooding, NMR can still read the meter.
- Errors in connecting or disconnecting your service when you move from one location to another will be eliminated.
- The NMR system will work in conjunction with our outage reporting system to enable us to know when your power is out and enhance our ability to restore service faster.
