JEA, the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville and City Kids Art Factory joined forces to bring art and inner city kids together to help make some of our tanks and other facilities blend in with the area.
The first three tanks completed -- one on Hendricks Avenue and two on Maitland Avenue -- were done as a joint partnership between JEA and the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville. As a result of this successful affiliation, the City Kids Art Factory was formed as a spin-off of the Cultural Council.
City Kids students, along with local artists Daniel Wynn and Verdell Benefield, came together to create a 92-foot long, bright, colorful mural which will cover the Bay Street tank. The mural, painted with acrylic on a Plexiglas canvas, depicts abstract versions of Jacksonville's bridges. The students, selected from area high schools based on their artistic talents and creativity, worked more than 20 hours on the project and received community service credits and an award for their efforts from the City Kids Art Factory and the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville.
The Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville seeks to enrich and improve lives through cultural growth by promoting awareness of cultural activities and issues, providing arts education programs to area students, and funding and technical assistance to its affiliate organizations and local artists.
The City Kids Art Factory seeks to provide positive youth development through visual arts by allowing students to engage in self expression, through hands-on experiences in painting, drawing and sculpture.
