JEA is proud that its electric and water facilities do more than just meet environmental requirements. Here are a few ways in which JEA goes "above and beyond" regulatory requirements at its facilities:
- Although it was still in compliance with environmental regulations, JEA retired its 51-year-old Southside Generating Station in October 2001 and transferred energy production to newer, cleaner units like the four natural gas combustion turbines at the new Brandy Branch facility.
- JEA has repowered its Northside Generating Station to use some of the cleanest coal-burning technology available. The new system has doubled power output from the facility, while decreasing air emissions by 10 percent.
- We've recently reduced water consumption by 80 percent at our Northside Generating Station.
- The improvements we've implemented at our wastewater treatment plants will help us to meet our target of a 50 percent nitrogen reduction in our treated wastewater by 2007.
- Sewage sludge from our Buckman wastewater treatment facility is now being dried and pelletized, then sold as useful fertilizer instead of being incinerated.
- JEA is spending $500 million over five years to replace its old, deteriorating sewer pipes, which will reduce sewer overflows brought on by heavy rains. This will minimize storm water infiltration which dilutes sewage and makes it more difficult to treat.
- Our sewage treatment plants have employed new, innovative technologies to reduce odors significantly.
- JEA is working with neighborhood groups to make sure residents are pleased with the appearance of our facilities, and we've given "facelifts" to many facilities throughout our service area.
