Building a Green Built Home

Building a Green Built ENERGY STAR ® home is not all that different from building any other home. The main difference is in the design, the materials used and the quality of the construction practices which combine to ensure a comfortable, energy-efficient home.

An ENERGY STAR home begins with proper design. It achieves energy savings through a variety of reliable and established technologies and building practices.

The most important components are:

  • Tight Construction
Improves comfort, improved indoor air quality and lower costs.
  • Tight Ducts
Crucial to energy efficiency and comfort. A number of factors can affect the functioning of ducts, including: sealing, location, insulation and sizing.
  • Improved Insulation
Keeps out excessive temperatures and maintains even temperatures between and across rooms inside the home.
  • High Performance Windows
Improves energy efficiency by reducing heat loss in cooler climates and heat gain in warmer climates.
  • Energy Efficient Heating & Cooling Equipment
Heating and cooling equipment can often be smaller than the equipment typically needed in a home built to the Model Energy Code.
