Line Maintainer Apprenticeship

SHARP for Line Maintainers Steps in the Hiring Process:

  1. Attend SHARP orientation,
  2. Pass TABE & Bennett assessments:
    • TABE passing grade = 10.0
    • Bennett passing grade = 47
      • FCCJ gives both tests regularly.
      • JEA accepts scores from tests taken within the past two years.
      • Call FCCJ at (904) 632-5020 to schedule appointment.
  3. Apply on-line at www.jea.com prior to the close date,
  4. Pass Physical Agilities tests,
  5. Attend and complete Line Maintainer climbing school,
  6. Background Screening completed,
    (criminal, employment, driver’s license)
  7. Candidate goes on Eligibility List. Veteran’s preference applies,
  8. Selection According to Civil Service Rules & Regulations.
  9. Conditional offer pending screening results,
  10. Physical / Substance abuse screening,
  11. Apprentice hired.

What do JEA Line Maintainers do?

  • Handling, setting and framing for installation of poles
  • Climbing poles
  • Conduit and cable Installation overhead and underground
  • Underground manholes, duct banks, street lighting overhead and underground
  • Overhead and underground equipment troubleshooting
  • Customer property restoration

What abilities must a JEA Line Maintainer apprentice/Line Maintainer have?

  • Physical ability
    • Must be able to work in the heat and cold
    • Must be able to work day or night
  • Mental ability
    • Must be able to focus
  • Dependability
    • Must be available to be on call
    • Avoid un-scheduled leave

Yes. JEA will provide:

  • Climbing Gear
  • Hand Tools

    • Gloves/sleeves

    • Safety glasses (prescription)
    • Safety Boots
    • Hardhat

  • Apprentices start at $16.93 per hour
    • Year 1
      • Step 1-$16.93
      • Step 2-$17.78 ($36,982/YR)
    • Year 2
      • Step 3-$19.22
      • Setp 4-$20.18 ($41,974/YR)
    • Year 3
      • Step 5-$21.19
      • Step 6-$22.25 ($46,280/YR)
