EPA research has shown that 21-30% of sanitary sewer overflows (SSO) nationally are caused by buildups of fats, oils and grease, a by-product from food service establishments. A report from the June 4, 2001 Wall Street Journal says "75% of the sewer systems in the US work at only half capacity due to grease clogs. The cost of keeping sewers open is estimated at $25 billion per year." Because of these issues JEA has developed the FOG (Fats, Oils and Greases) Reduction Program. JEA is committed to protecting the public health and our environment by reducing the number of FOG related SSOs.
