JEA Purchases St. Joe Utility in St. Johns County

Jacksonville, FL (November 9, 2004) - With the approval of the St. Johns County Commission last week, JEA has acquired the St. Joe Utilities Company (SJUC) - an investor-owned water, wastewater and reclaimed water utility.

JEA paid $2.2 million for the utility's assets, which include a 16-inch water well, three monitoring wells, a wastewater pump station, 7,900 feet of water distribution lines, and 7,460 feet of wastewater collection lines.

Currently, the utility only serves about 15 residential customers and the Bartrum Trail High School. However, JEA staff recommended purchasing the utility now so JEA can meet long-term growth expected in the area.

SJUC was created to serve the planned community of River Town, a mixed-use, master-planned community in northwestern St. Johns County. River Town will evolve gradually over the next 15-20 years and include commercial, residential, and retail development.

JEA inherited an agreement to provide water and wastewater at a wholesale rate to SJUC with the purchase of the United Water Company in 2002.

JEA is the eighth largest community-owned electric utility in America, providing electric, water and sewer services to more than 750,000 accounts in Northeast Florida.
