What:

Demolition of Boiler Unit #4 at JEA's Southside Generating Station (SGS)

Where:

Southside Generating Station
801 Broadcast Place
Located on Southbank between Duval County School Board building and WJXT Channel 4 Studios

Overview:

Planned implosion of Boiler Unit # 4
Southside Generating Station was decommissioned in October 2001 after 51 years of service.

Boiler #4 is approximately 60 feet long, 45 feet wide, and 134 feet tall. It weighs approximately 1500 tons was placed in service in 1958. Unit 4 is a top-hung boiler--meaning it does not touch the ground and can sway within the support structure. The water holding capacity is 224 thousand pounds, which is equivalent to 28,000 gallons. Last month, the slightly larger Southside Unit 5 was demolished by implosion.

A community task force has made recommendations to the JEA Board for the site of the Southside Generating Station to be redeveloped into a mixed-use development, following the guidelines in the Downtown Master Plan. The task force recommended, in part, to include public open space, view corridors to the river, an extension of the River Walk and a signature public park. The group recommended the development should also include unique design elements that people outside Jacksonville would recognize and identify as our community. The development will also complement the existing neighborhoods in the area.
