Pipe Installation for JEA's Downtown Chilled Water Plant Begins
Jacksonville, FL (January 28, 2004) - Work on JEA's Chilled Water Plant in downtown will impact some roads adjacent to Jacksonville City Hall in February as contractors begin installing twin pipes that will later provide service to the new downtown library and courthouse.
The construction work, which will involve mostly drilling beneath the roadways, will take place from the Chilled Water Plant on Duval Street and run south/southeast along Jillian Street to the new library, the first customer set to begin using chilled water from JEA's downtown plant later this year.
JEA began construction on the $8.3 million downtown plant in 2002. JEA's first chilled water plant on Hogan Street opened in April 2003 and provides service to new ballpark, the arena and will soon serve the Amsterdam Sky Café, located between these venues.
Using chilled water, building owners can utilize space that would have been required for cooling systems for office, retail or other uses and avoid the cost of installing a chiller system on site. JEA representatives are currently meeting with downtown building owners and developers to attract other large commercial customers to use the service.
