JACKSONVILLE: SOLAR POWER CAPITAL OF FLORIDA JEA & JAA PARTNER ON NEWEST SOLAR POWER PROJECT
The parking garage at the Jacksonville International Airport is undergoing a bit of a facelift as more than 450 photovoltaic solar panels are being added to the top of the structure's walls. The Jacksonville Airport Authority has partnered with JEA to install the single largest solar power system in the city.
"Doing our part to have bluer skies in Jacksonville is a natural for us at JAA. Plus, the airport is the perfect place for a solar power system because thousands of people can see an operating clean solar power system up close as they visit our city," said John Clark, JAA Executive Director. Solar power produces zero air emissions, and that means cleaner air and bluer skies.
The airport solar power system will be the most high profile in Northeast Florida. That's quite a distinction considering Jacksonville is the Solar Power Capital of Florida. Over the past few years, JEA has quietly become the largest producer of solar power in Florida with installations at all public high schools, most colleges and universities in Jacksonville, as well as several other locations.
"We're excited to share our active commitment to the environment with JAA and others in our community through JEA's Clean Power Program," said Walt Bussells, JEA CEO.
JEA has made an aggressive commitment to obtain 7.5% of its generating capacity from clean and green power sources by the year 2015. Solar power is one of many methods of meeting that goal. JEA also has a solar incentive program that helps pay for solar installations at customers' homes and businesses. That program has more than 400 community partners to date and is open to all JEA electric customers. Through the program, JEA will pay for up to a third of the cost of a solar system at customer locations.
