FLORIDA HAZARDOUS WEATHER WEEK: LIGHTNING PROTECTION FOR YOUR COMPUTER?

As part of the State of Florida's Hazardous Weather Week February 17 -23, JEA and Duval Prepares, a community coalition formed to make Duval County disaster prepared, are reminding everyone that lightning can damage or destroy sensitive electronics like computers in an instant.

Florida is the lightning capitol of the world and Duval County has among the highest lightning strike rates in the state. Every year Florida insurance companies pay millions of dollars in claims for damages caused by lightning. It has been estimated that in Florida, damage from electrical surges due to lightning could total over $100 million a year.

But why wait until lightning damages your computer or other electronic devices like your television, telephone, answering machines, stereo, VCR, or microwave oven? The best first line of defense is a good surge protector. You can buy one at most electronics stores or home improvements stores, but you need to know what to look for. Call JEA at 665-6000 or download a copy to get a free fact sheet on surge suppressors.

JEA also offers a surge protection service. There are two levels of protection, each with two payment options. Customers receive a free check of their home's grounding system, free installation of a high quality meter-based surge protector with warranty, and the option of purchasing additional point-of-use surge protectors for various devices inside the home.

Customers can call 665-6000 for more information.
