JEA Project Update

Jacksonville, FL (August 30, 2004) - Several new projects are under way in the Jacksonville area to improve electric, water and sewer operations in the city.

St. Johns County - Between now and late February 2005, JEA is installing a new water main and sewer main that will serve a new residential area in Bartram Plantation. JEA, through contractor John L. Woody, Inc., will use some horizontal directional (trenchless) drilling to install the mains and lessen disruption during the work. The new mains, along with fire hydrants, will be installed along State Road 13 from Greenbriar Road to Magnolia Drive, and along Greenbriar Road to Bartram Plantation. The total construction area is about 1.5 miles in length.

Baldwin - To reduce power outages and upgrade the existing electrical system, JEA will relocate power lines serving customers on Pender and Lafayette streets east of Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. The project will begin today and is scheduled for completion by the end of September. In addition, eight new street lights will be added in the area. Customers should only experience a short one-to-three hour power outage while the new lines are converted and JEA will notify residents in advance of the outage.

West Jacksonville - Today, JEA begins a four-month project to consolidate electric transmission lines serving west Jacksonville. Contractor C&C Powerline, Inc. will conduct the work along Crystal Springs Road, where JEA currently has two transmission circuits of 138,000 and 230,000 volts on three structures in the area. The transmission lines will be moved to larger, single transmission poles in the same area. This will allow JEA to eliminate a series of existing transmission poles and easily add new circuits in the future as customer electric demands increase. (Customer electric demand in growing at three percent a year in Jacksonville, with most new demand originating from the north and west sides of town.)

Upon completion of these and other JEA projects, any existing grass, curb, gutter, driveway, sidewalk, or other items affected will be returned to pre-construction state.

Customers should contact Project Outreach at 665-7500, or visit construction.jea.com for more information.

JEA is the eighth largest community owned electric utility in America providing electricity, water and sewer services to more than 750,000 accounts in Northeast Florida.
