Electric System
JEA delivers electricity to more than 370,000 meters in Northeast Florida by means of a distribution system. The distribution system is connected to JEA's electric plants and to other electric systems in the U.S. through JEA's transmission system, which is composed of transmission lines, large transformers and a variety of safety and monitoring equipment. The transmission system transports large amounts of electricity at high voltages over great distances. JEA has more than $253 million in transmission assets and 714 miles of transmission lines.
JEA's distribution system utilizes substations filled with a multitude of equipment, such as transformers, breakers, switching equipment, monitoring equipment and various safety devices to receive high-voltage power from the transmission system. The voltage is then reduced at the substation for delivery to customers' homes and businesses over smaller transformers, wires, switches, breakers and other safety equipment.
